It warns of the dangers of drinking during the day. A clear risk to all workers enjoying a day off in the sun.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that officers will be conducting roadside checks, testing any drivers suspected of drink or drug driving. They will also be targeting known offenders.

Motor Patrols Chief Inspector George Maratty said: "Northumbria Police will not tolerate drink driving. We are committed to doing all we can to put a stop to it and throughout June any motorist stopped at any time by a police officer could be required to provide a specimen of breath or take a drug test.“

"We know the vast majority of drivers are sensible but will be targeting those who decide to chance it and take a risk. Anyone found in charge of a motor vehicle and over the limit will be arrested.“

"We don’t want to stop people enjoying their summer but our message is very clear- if you are having a drink then leave the car at home.“

A conviction for drink driving can have a devastating effect on a person’s employment, with many employers seeing it as a reason for dismissal. Likewise, many businesses suffer as a result of losing key personnel who they cannot afford to keep on whilst disqualified from driving.

Solicitor Andrew Swan of Newcastle-based law firm Short Richardson & Forth LLP commented: “We deal with a lot of motoring offences through the courts, particularly drink driving. We do tend to see a rise of drinking cases in the summer, often as a result of people attending barbeques and underestimating the amount of alcohol they have consumed. Leaving the car at home is a sensible option and avoids a possible one-year driving ban and a fine. Employees should also consider the damaging effect on their careers.“
